Soccer is one of the biggest sports in Rwanda. A lot of population in Rwanda are interested in it. But it is very much dominated by men where it is rare to see women playing soccer.
It was until Rwemarika Felicite started an organization that aims to empower women in sport. Since 2001, her organization successfully introduced football in all province of Rwanda. It also focuses on reproductive health, economic empowerment, promotion of women’s rights and addressing and overcoming the trauma of gender-based violence. AKWOS coaches and teachers also work in local schools around the country with adolescent girls organizing sport tournaments and conducting trainings in life skills.
Her organization empowers women through sport & education to improve their rights, break barriers between social classes; raise women’s standing in society, enhance unity & reconciliation and prevent HIV/Aids.
